Damien Molony in ‘The Hard Problem’ 21 January – 16 April 2015 with NT Live cinema broadcasts across the world
We recently reported on Damien’s casting in new Tom Stoppard play The Hard Problem alongside Olivia Vinall, Vera Chok, Jonathan Coy, Lucy Robinson and Parth Thakerar, and today brings even more exciting news!
The National Theatre has announced its new season and released performance dates with an official synopsis for the production via their website and new season brochure.
The play will have a long run at the Dorfman Theatre at the National, from 28 January – 16 April 2015 (with previews from 21 January) and will also be broadcast in cinemas across the world 16 April 2015 (great news for international fans!) with National Theatre Live.
Hilary, a young psychology researcher at a brain-science institute, is nursing a private sorrow and a troubling question at work, where psychology and biology meet. If there is nothing but matter, what is consciousness?
This is ‘the hard problem’ which puts Hilary at odds with her colleagues who include her first mentor Spike, her boss Leo and the billionaire founder of the institute, Jerry.
Is the day coming when the computer and the fMRI scanner will answer all the questions psychology can ask?
Meanwhile Hilary needs a miracle, and she is prepared to pray for one.

The Hard Problem is Sir Tom Stoppard’s first play since 2006 and will be the last play directed by Sir Nicholas Hytner at the National, who will be leaving next year after a decade as the Artistic Director. A significant moment in theatre history then, and a long production brought to life by a creative partnership of immense (indeed knighted) talent, with an impressive cast. The Hard Problem is going to be big and is not one to be missed!
